Overview
In 1989, the college was established as the College of Fisheries Science while the university reorganized into a national university. In 2001, it was renamed as the College of Life and Resource Sciences and reestablished as the College of Life Sciences in 2005. The College is the most integrated institution focused on the study of aquatic bioscience and biotechnology containing cultivation, utilization and processing of marine organisms. Until 2023, the college contains 3 departments including Department of Food Science, Department of Aquaculture, and Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology, 2 institutes including Institute of Marine Biology, and Institute of Food Safety and Risk Management, and 3 programs with Doctoral Degree Program in Marine Biotechnology, Bachelor Degree Program in Marine Biotechnology and International Master Program in Marine Biotechnology and Environmental Ecology Sustainability that are composed of 81 faculty members, 24 staff members (including teaching assistants) and 1,727 students. For student’s practical operation and internship, the College provides Biotechnology Education and Research Center, Terrestrial Animal Experimental Center, Aquatic Animal Center, and Center for Electron Microscopy. In addition, industrial service units such as Food Industry Research and Service Center, Traceability Certification and Inspection Center were established to build links between academics and industry. The College undertakes the “Fisheries Extension Committee” for promoting the fishery and implementing some training program to fishermen, the important contact information to Academics, Industry, Fishery Association and also fishermen. The committee is comprised of several promotion committee and professors from Department of Food Science, Department of Aquaculture, Department of Environmental Biology and Fisheries Science, the Institute of Marine Affairs and Resource Management, and the Institute of Applied Economics. In the aspect of course curriculum, the College creates interesting fields such as ‘Program of Biotechnology’ and ‘Program of Marine Biodiversityfor accelerating the discoveries and creative inventions of students according to their own interests and needs.

Prospective
“Aquatic Animal Center” and “Experimental Animal Center” were constructed in 2007. Another building, Life Sciences Building and Marine organisms museum were constructed in 2010, 2018 respectively. Our current research activities contain marine biology, marine biological resource, marine bioscience, biotechnology, food processing, food safety, and sustainable aquaculture. We continue to establish international cooperation programs, including assigned agreements with foreign Universities to exchange scholars and students. We strengthen to offer English lectures for international students under the programs of Taiwan Scholarship, Pacific Taiwan Scholarship and International Center for Developmental and Education Fund.
